Silver Prices Under Pressure as Strong Dollar and Economic Data Weigh
Silver prices have come under renewed selling pressure in recent days, as a stronger US dollar and unexpectedly solid economic data out of the United States combined to erode confidence across the precious metals complex.
The white metal had settled at $67.61 USD on Tuesday at the COMEX, but the macroeconomic backdrop shifted decisively against it during Wednesday's session. Robust US purchasing managers' indices underscored the resilience of the American economy, tempering hopes for near-term monetary easing and keeping rate concerns alive in the market.
A stronger greenback makes the dollar-denominated metal more expensive for international buyers, dampening overseas interest. At the same time, the yield on ten-year US Treasuries pushed toward the 5% mark, a configuration that traditionally spells headwind for non-yielding assets, as fixed-income instruments become more attractive and the opportunity cost of holding metals rises.
