Silver Prices Volatile Ahead of Fed Decision
Silver prices are volatile as investors await the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision. The market is pricing in a 64.2% chance of unchanged rates and a 35.8% chance of a hike, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool. This level of uncertainty is unusually high for a Fed meeting.
The strong dollar has been an additional headwind for silver, making it more expensive for overseas buyers. The greenback has recently rallied, amplifying selling pressure and contributing to a 2% drop in silver prices on Tuesday.
Despite the short-term noise, the fundamental picture remains bullish. Industrial demand accounts for 58% of annual silver consumption, driven by solar panels, electric vehicles, and AI data centers. The silver market is heading into its sixth consecutive annual supply deficit in 2026, with demand expected to outstrip supply by 46.3 million ounces.
The Fed's decision may determine which force, geopolitical de-escalation or monetary tightening, wins out. Analysts at Goldsilver.com stress that the vote distribution within the committee matters as much as the rate decision itself, revealing how much momentum exists for a September move.
