Silver Purity Standards Vary by Intended Use: Fine, Sterling, or Britannia
The purity of silver is typically expressed in fineness, indicating the percentage of pure silver in an alloy. For example, 999 fineness means 999 parts out of 1000 are pure silver. This can vary depending on the intended use: fine silver for investment coins and bars, sterling silver for jewellery and household items, or Britannia silver with a higher standard than sterling.
The daily silver rate you see online is just a benchmark. The final showroom price will always be higher due to making charges (varying by design) and 3% GST. Additionally, the weight of embedded stones is excluded when calculating the net silver weight for pricing in studded jewellery.
Investors can buy and hold silver digitally through online platforms without taking physical delivery, but such instruments are not regulated by SEBI. Silver ETFs or Funds offer an alternative to physical assets, tracking domestic silver prices subject to some error.
