Silver Slides on Hawkish Fed Comments Amid Tightening Supply Picture

The silver market experienced its sharpest one-day drop in months due to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish address at the Jackson Hole symposium. His comments sparked a 4.2% decline, causing the metal to settle at $67.09 per ounce on the Comex.

The downward trend was largely driven by traders' revised expectations for US monetary policy, with Warsh hinting at further tightening if price pressures persist. This prospect is particularly concerning for silver, as higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding the metal and bolster the dollar, weighing on dollar-denominated commodities.

However, beneath the volatility lies a fundamental narrative that remains intact: the supply-demand gap is expected to continue, with 2026 projected to mark the sixth consecutive year of structural market deficit. Global mine production is forecast to contract by 0.3%, while demand for physical investment products is set to climb roughly 7%.

The industry's ability to expand physical silver supply in the near term is further threatened by a tightening squeeze in the by-product markets, particularly zinc inventories at the London Metal Exchange, which have fallen to a four-year low. This has led some producers to consolidate capacity in response to the persistently tight market.
