Agricultural commodities saw price increases across multiple commodity groups last week, with wheat hitting its highest level in over three years. The MXV-Index closed at 2,933 points.

The Black Sea region's instability due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine negotiations and a recent commercial cargo ship incident off the coast of Romania raised concerns about continued export disruptions. As shipping risks increased, insurance costs rose, and shipping companies became more cautious when accepting cargo in the region.

Russian wheat exports in August could fall by 60% year-on-year to 1.8 million tons, according to Rusagrotrans, a Russian grain market analysis and consulting firm. Ukrainian grain vessels waiting to pass through Romania's Sulina Canal faced prolonged waiting times and increased transportation costs due to limited customs capacity.

The increase in US wheat prices to around $305/tonne and Australian wheat (APW) at $315-320/tonne compared to Black Sea wheat made alternative supply sources more attractive. Egypt purchased two wheat shipments from France, while Sudan made its first purchase of French wheat in 18 years.

The futures market saw a reduction in short positions by funds, indicating speculative capital reacting positively to new supply risks. Technical buying contributed to the rapid rise in wheat prices last week.
