Silver's Hidden Role in the Solar Industry
Solar panels have become a ubiquitous sight on rooftops and fields across the United States, but beneath their sleek glass surfaces lies a hidden story of silver demand.
A standard solar panel contains about 6 to 8 grams of silver, which may seem insignificant. However, multiply this by the hundreds of millions of panels manufactured each year, and the total amount is substantial.
Mexico sits at the top of the global silver production list, mining 172.9 million ounces in 2025, roughly a fifth of global supply. Most of this ore comes from the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains that drain west toward the Sonora River and the farming towns below.
The industry has spent two decades selling the simplicity of solar panels, but beneath their inert appearance lies a complex story of metal demand. Silver paste is printed in fine lines across the face of each cell, collecting current and moving it out of the panel and into the wire.
