Sonoro Gold Surges as Permitting Breakthrough Looms for Cerro Caliche
The junior mining sector has been notorious for punishing patience, but Sonoro Gold may be on the cusp of a breakthrough. Shares in the Canadian explorer jumped over 10 percent midweek as investors bet on a shift from development-stage hopeful to actual gold producer.
A long-awaited document from Mexican regulators is the key to unlocking this transition. After months of gridlock, industry representatives report that federal permitting is moving again, with the environmental authority SEMARNAT working through its backlog at a faster clip.
The timing is fortuitous: over 2,000 delegates are gathered in Hermosillo for the 'Discoveries 2026' mining conference, where the mood is upbeat about renewed momentum in the sector. Sonoro Gold's flagship project, Cerro Caliche, has been waiting on a final environmental impact assessment.
The economics of the project have already been stress-tested, with a net present value of $224 million and an internal rate of return of 50 percent, using a gold price assumption of $3,500 per ounce. The company has also secured its near-term funding needs through a private placement in June.
