Solar Saves Europe Billions Amid Iran War-Driven Gas Price Surge
The ongoing war on Iran has sent shockwaves through Europe's energy markets, driving gas prices to record highs. The benchmark Dutch TTF natural gas price surged from €31.96 MWh in February to €72.35MWh in September, a 126.5 percent increase.
However, solar power has emerged as a powerful buffer against these fluctuations, saving the EU an estimated €37.4 billion by reducing demand for gas imports.
SolarPower Europe's CEO Walburga Hemetsberger notes that every megawatt-hour generated by solar power makes Europe safer and more secure in its energy supply.
The EU has seen significant growth in renewable energy, particularly solar, which supplied 25 percent of the bloc's power in June. Spain has been a leader in this shift, doubling its wind and solar capacity since 2019 and reducing the influence of expensive fossil generators on the electricity price by 75 percent.
