South Africa's 'Gas Cliff' Looms as Industry Leaders Convene in Cape Town

South Africa is facing an urgent energy challenge as it navigates towards securing its future gas supply. The looming 'gas cliff' poses a significant risk to industrial production, investment, employment, and the country's economic competitiveness.

The issue will be addressed at the Africa Gas Forum, taking place alongside the Africa Energy Indaba 2027 from March 2-4 in Cape Town. Industry leaders, government officials, gas producers, infrastructure developers, investors, and major energy users will discuss the practical steps required to move South Africa towards long-term energy security.

Jaco Human, Executive Officer of the Industrial Gas Users Association of Southern Africa (IGUA-SA), will address the critical discussion 'South Africa's Gas Cliff, From Supply Risk to a Secure Gas Future'. IGUA-SA has warned that temporary solutions like Sasol's plan to provide methane-rich gas from its Secunda operations do not remove the fundamental challenge facing the country.

The clock is ticking, and South Africa needs to establish alternative sources of gas quickly enough to protect major industrial users. Long-term security will require coordinated action across government and industry, investment in LNG import capacity, pipelines, storage, and associated gas infrastructure.
