South Africa's Gas-to-Power Bidding Process Remains on Track

The Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office in South Africa has confirmed that its first gas-to-power bidding process is on track to meet its timeline. The process, which aims to procure 2,000MW of generation capacity through competitive bids, had a bidding window that closed on May 29.

According to Precious Edward, head of the IPP Office, the programme remains within the communicated timeline and no date changes are expected. Four bids were submitted, exceeding the government's target, representing about 2,800MW of generation capacity.

The preferred bidder announcement is seen as a key milestone for South Africa's gas sector, providing demand certainty for planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) import and gas supply projects. The Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme is the country's first competitive procurement process dedicated to gas-fired electricity generation.
