South Korea Denies Final Decision on Alaska LNG Investment
South Korea's potential investment in US energy projects has been making headlines, with President Donald Trump stating that Seoul plans to invest up to $200 billion. However, a clarification from Seoul indicates that no decision has yet been taken on whether to invest in the Alaska LNG project, nor on the scale of any such investment.
The gas-fired power station in Texas is reportedly the first designated project under this strategic investment programme, with an estimated cost of over $22 billion. This project aims to supply electricity to data centres and semiconductor manufacturing facilities.
The Alaska LNG project involves a 807-mile-long gas pipeline and a plant with a production capacity of up to 20 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year. While there have been non-binding letters of intent from Japanese companies JERA and Tokyo Gas to purchase LNG, this does not imply financial closure or the start of construction.
