South Korean Shipbuilders Surpass Order Intake Target as LNG Carrier Demand Booms

South Korean shipbuilders have surpassed their order intake target of 50 trillion won this year, thanks to a selective focus on highly profitable vessels. The industry's cumulative order intake has reached $37.62 billion as of October 25th, with major players HDKSOE, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean leading the charge.

HDKSOE, the leader in the South Korean shipbuilding industry, has recorded a cumulative order intake of $18.71 billion for the year, representing 169 vessels. This accounts for 80.3% of its annual target of $23.31 billion and is nearing its goal.

The industry's growth can be attributed to its focus on highly profitable vessels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. HDKSOE has secured orders for 17 LNG carriers this year alone, with South Korean shipbuilders holding a 61% share of the market.
