South Korea’s Base Oil Boom Fueled by Middle East Supply Crunch
South Korean refiners are capitalizing on a global shortage of lubricant base oils, driven by disruptions in the Middle East. SK Innovation stands out with its advanced technology and premium production capacity, expanding into electric vehicle fluids and immersion cooling for AI data centers.
Base oil is a key raw material for lubricants used in automobiles, ships, and industrial machinery. SK Innovation’s Environmental Science & Technology Institute in Daejeon is at the forefront of research, analyzing how lubricants and base oils perform under varying conditions. The company’s pilot plants simulate commercial production processes, ensuring stable operations even amid geopolitical risks.
SK Innovation, the world leader in Group III base oils, is driving market growth through its subsidiary SK Enmove. The company posted an operating profit of 691.9 billion won ($515 million) in the second quarter, up from 608 billion won for all of 2022. This surge came as supply shortages followed damage to Qatar’s Pearl Gas-to-Liquids facility during the Middle East war.
The company’s research extends beyond basic analysis, addressing tighter emissions regulations, vehicle electrification, and other market shifts. SK Innovation also plans to expand into immersion-cooling products for AI data centers, leveraging its expertise in high-quality lubricant base oils.
