South Sudan Conflict Cuts Oil Production by Nearly Fifty Percent
The ongoing conflict in South Sudan has taken a significant toll on the country's oil production. According to U.S Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Donald Booth, the five-month-long conflict has cut oil production by nearly fifty percent.
Fighting between government forces and SPLA-in Opposition forces has mainly been concentrated in oil-producing states of Unity and Upper Nile.
Booth emphasized the need for transparency in oil management to ensure the well-being of all South Sudanese people. He warned that if the war continues, the country will suffer economically for a long time.
Booth called for the restoration of peace and an executable transitional process that would put in place necessary reforms, including financial management reform. This would guarantee that natural resources, particularly oil, are used for the benefit of South Sudan's people.
