South Sudan Seeks to Revive Oil Sector with Investment Push
South Sudan's oil production is on the rise after years of decline due to conflict and underinvestment. The country holds an estimated 3.5 billion barrels of proven reserves, giving it one of East Africa's most significant hydrocarbon resource bases.
The Undersecretary of Petroleum, Dr. Santino Ayuel Longar, has been driving the sector's revival with a focus on improving recovery from ageing fields, attracting fresh capital, and advancing domestic refining.
Longar credits residual oil recovery studies, accelerated field-development programmes, drilling campaigns, and upgrades to critical infrastructure for helping reverse the decline in production at the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC).
The GPOC has successfully reached a production level of 60,158 barrels per day on May 29, its highest level since 2005. Longar aims to increase national crude production by up to 50 percent through improved recovery and new investment.
