SpaceX Seeks Florida Approval for Natural Gas Pipeline to Fuel Cape Canaveral Launches
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is pursuing approval to construct a natural gas pipeline in Florida to support its rocket launches from Cape Canaveral. A subsidiary, Coastal Connect Services (CCS), has filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission to approve a tariff for a 32.4-mile, 16-inch natural gas transmission pipeline in Brevard County.
The pipeline aims to deliver natural gas to SpaceX’s Starship rockets, which use liquid methane as propellant. The company argues that current truck-based supply methods and existing local pipelines cannot meet its growing demands. The proposed infrastructure would connect to the Florida Gas Transmission (FGT) interstate pipeline, ensuring a reliable fuel supply.
SpaceX’s move reflects its strategy of controlling its supply chain, a tactic that has helped it stay ahead in rocket and spacecraft development. The company has also requested an 8-mile pipeline for its Boca Chica launch site in South Texas. Additionally, SpaceX has begun hiring natural gas traders to secure cost-effective fuel for launches in both Florida and Texas.
SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The petition highlights the company’s push to expand its infrastructure, underscoring its commitment to efficient and safe natural gas delivery for future launches.
