SpaceX Takes on Gas Turbine Production Bottlenecks in AI Infrastructure

SpaceX is stepping up to address power bottlenecks in AI infrastructure by producing key gas turbine components in-house. According to Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, the company will directly cast gas turbine blades and vanes to reduce production time.

The move comes as the AI industry faces a shortage of graphics processing units (GPUs), including Nvidia's latest Blackwell chips, which have lead times of several months. The International Energy Agency projects that global data centre electricity use will double by 2030.

Major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft are building their own gas power facilities near data centres to secure power, as traditional grid connections are not available. This trend is driven by the need for faster deployment of AI infrastructure, but it also raises concerns about air pollution and community health problems tied to expanding natural gas generation.

SpaceX's in-house production of gas turbine parts could create a gap that rivals with no manufacturing base would find difficult to close in the short term. However, the ability to secure actual production capacity and its scale still needs to be confirmed.
