Spain Boosts Russian Gas Imports Ahead of EU Ban

Spain's imports of Russian gas have seen a significant surge in the first half of 2026, rising by 42% to reach 37,172 GWh.

This increase comes at a time when the European Union is moving towards banning imports from Russia, with the EU requiring member states to adapt their contracts and sources of supply to the new restrictions.

The data shows that Russia has gained weight among Spain's gas suppliers during the first six months of the year, but the flow decreased again in July due to a change in the composition of gas entries during the summer.

Spain's diversified supply structure, which includes regasification plants for liquefied natural gas from different countries and connections with other markets, is expected to help mitigate the impact of any potential ban on Russian imports.
