Spain Butane Price Hits Two-Year High Amid Energy Concerns

The price of butane cylinders in Spain has reached its highest level since 2022, sparking concern for households struggling with energy budgets. The standard 12.5 kg cylinder now costs 18.84 euros, a 5.66 percent jump from the previous rate.

This increase is part of the government's regulated price review process, which aims to shield consumers from wild swings in global energy prices. MITECO and La Moncloa have confirmed a new maximum price of 19.55 euros for the 12.5 kg cylinder, effective until June 30, 2027.

The butane price is influenced by international propane and butane prices, shipping costs, and the euro-dollar exchange rate. The government sets the maximum price every two months, with a rule that no single change can be more than 5 percent up or down per review.

As colder months approach, this price hike will likely put pressure on household energy budgets. The government's package of energy protections for winter includes limits on regulated natural gas tariff increases and the butane cap.
