Spain to Block Russian LNG Imports from 2027 Amid EU Restrictions

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that Spain intends to ban imports of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2027. This decision comes despite existing contracts held by Spanish companies for supplies of Russian energy resources.

The minister noted that Madrid would comply with the relevant restrictions previously adopted by the European Union. He added that some Spanish companies have long-term LNG supply contracts that will remain in force for decades.

Spain has significant LNG storage and processing capacities, which could potentially be used to help other European countries meet their energy needs. The minister suggested that Spain could become a reliable partner for LNG supplies from the United States.
