Spain to Halt Russian LNG Imports Amid EU Supply Shift
Spain plans to end imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from January 1, 2027, in line with European Union restrictions. According to Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the government aims to comply with EU rules, despite existing long-term supply agreements with Russian suppliers.
The move could reshape Spain's energy sourcing strategy and increase reliance on alternative suppliers, particularly the United States. Spain has a large LNG storage and regasification infrastructure, which can support imports from other international markets.
Other European countries are also preparing for reduced dependence on Russian gas. Hungary expects to secure its gas requirements without Russian gas by October 2027. The EU's energy diversification strategy may lead to increased demand for non-Russian LNG.
