Spain's Natural Gas Demand Soars 9.1% in August, US Tops Suppliers

The demand for natural gas in Spain increased by 9.1% in August compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 25,086 gigawatt hours (GWh). This growth was mainly driven by a 31% increase in consumption for electricity generation.

According to Enagás' statistical bulletin, the use of gas by power plants stood at 11,952 GWh in August, accounting for 48% of the total demand on the national market. Conventional consumption, which includes households, businesses, and industry, made up the remaining 52%.

Conventional demand actually fell by 5.2% year-over-year to 13,134 GWh, with a decrease of 8% if labor and temperature effects are excluded. Between January and August, national gas consumption totaled 216,213 GWh, representing an increase of 2.3% compared to the same period last year.

The United States was the main source of gas that arrived in Spain in August, with 38.9% of total supplies and 11,571 GWh, mostly in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Algeria occupied second place, with a share of 34.7% and 9,897 GWh.
