Sri Lanka Clarifies Global Scope of US Secondary Sanctions Amid Iranian Tanker Standoff
Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry clarified that US secondary sanctions announced in August apply globally and do not target the island nation specifically.
The clarification came after reports emerged that around 20 Iranian oil tankers were stranded off Sri Lanka's southwestern coast, with some facing shortages of food, fuel, and fresh water.
The US measures announced on August 24 state that entities providing services to US-sanctioned vessels could risk losing access to the US financial system.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman, Thushara Rodrigo, stated that 'the US has issued secondary sanctions as their own common policy perspective which is applied globally and does not target only Sri Lanka or any specific country.'
