Stock Market Mixed as Treasury Yields and Oil Prices See Slight Relief

The US stock market is experiencing a mixed day ahead of a busy week filled with potentially market-moving events. The S&P 500 index slipped 0.3% and moved further away from its all-time high set earlier this month.

Technology stocks led the decline, with Nvidia dropping 2.3%, Micron Technology falling 6%, and Broadcom declining 2%. These losses dragged the index lower, despite a majority of stocks rising.

The bond market has been a significant factor influencing stock prices recently, with longer-term Treasury yields climbing due to concerns about high inflation, government debt, and other factors. The US Treasury Department's surprise move last week to increase planned buybacks of Treasurys may have only had a limited effect on containing the rise in yields.

However, on Monday, the yield of the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.70% from 4.74%, and oil prices dropped, with Brent crude falling 2.3% to $90.55 per barrel. This helped bring down yields and put pressure on inflation, which has been higher than desired for years.

Analysts warn that the US government's attempts to influence the bond market could ultimately mean higher pressure on inflation, raising concerns about the Federal Reserve's decision-making process.
