Stocks Slide Amid Oil Price Surge and Earnings Reports
US stocks took a hit on Thursday as oil prices rose and more companies reported their quarterly earnings. The S&P 500 fell by 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 363 points, or 0.7%. The Nasdaq composite also declined by 0.2%.
Despite the decline, many experts are optimistic about the market's prospects for August. Clark Bellin, president and chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth, noted that 'August is off to an extremely strong start, but there is still plenty of August left to go.'
A number of companies reported earnings ahead of expectations, including Warner Bros. Discovery, which rose 1.5%, and Molson Coors, which gained 1%. However, others fared poorly, with Honeywell Aerospace falling 19.2% and AppLovin slumping 19.6%.
The strong overall profits from companies have helped alleviate concerns about the market being overpriced. With roughly 85% of S&P 500 companies having reported their results, earnings growth for the period is shaping up to be the strongest since 2021.
