Stocks Tumble Amid Rising Oil Prices and Treasury Yields
U.S. stocks suffered losses on Tuesday as oil prices and Treasury yields continued to climb. The S&P 500 dropped 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq composite slid 0.8%. The increase in yields, particularly the 10-year Treasury's reach of 5.00%, made borrowing more expensive for households, businesses, and the U.S. government.
Darrell Cronk, president of Wells Fargo Investment Institute, stated that this results in a market that must work harder to generate earnings growth as investors become less willing to pay premium valuations for that growth. Oil prices rose 2.9% to settle at $108.75 per barrel of Brent crude.
Traders anticipate the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates, with a hike expected but some uncertainty lingering. The recent surge in Treasury yields and oil prices has raised concerns about high inflation lasting for years, which is compounded by the U.S. government's massive debt level and other issues.
