Strong Copper Pricing Helps Offset Weather-Related Shutdown at Antofagasta's Los Pelambres Mine
Antofagasta, a Chilean-focused copper producer listed on the London Stock Exchange under LSE:ANTO, reported strong revenue and earnings despite a weather-related shutdown at its Los Pelambres mine.
The company's production guidance was reduced due to the extreme weather conditions that forced a temporary halt in operations. However, mining activity has since resumed, and production is ramping back up gradually.
Antofagasta's realised copper pricing was exceptionally strong, lifting revenue, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation, and margin to unusually healthy levels. The company sells its copper into a market driven by supply disruption, restocking behaviour, and structural demand narrative attached to electrification and grid investment.
The expansion of Antofagasta's Chilean copper output involves desalination infrastructure, concentrator upgrades, and lengthy permitting processes. While the industry backdrop makes this investment more compelling, with global copper supply growth consistently disappointing and producers holding scarce brownfield expansions, investors are left with open questions about how quickly trends can feed through to reported numbers.
