Structural Challenges: The Unsustainable Reality of Modern Energy Systems
Modern societies are facing significant challenges in their energy systems due to a lack of understanding and public dialogue that often distorts reality. The electrification of Europe and the United States is accelerating, but natural gas remains essential for grid stability. Oil markets continue to shape global economic behavior.
The first difficulty is that electricity markets are governed by marginal pricing, which means that even when renewables produce electricity at zero marginal cost, the final clearing price reflects the cost of gas-fired flexibility. This mechanism ensures reliability but also leads to severe time lag and internal friction in energy markets.
The second difficulty is that natural gas remains essential for grid stability because renewables were expanded without matching storage. Europe installed more than 200 gigawatts of solar and wind power between 2005 and 2025, but added less than 15 gigawatts of long-duration storage. This has led to a dependence on gas, which provides more than 50% of peak electricity in Greece and Italy.
The third difficulty is that oil pricing is multi-layered and widely misunderstood. Crude oil benchmarks such as Brent and West Texas Intermediate influence global pricing, but they do not directly determine pump prices. The final price depends on refining margins, logistics costs, and taxes.
