Sugarcane and Wheat Price Fixation Debacle Continues in Sindh

The debate over price fixation and procurement of two major crops, sugarcane and wheat, has begun again in Sindh. The minimum support prices for both crops are usually fixed around October, with crushing starting in November for sugarcane and late February for wheat.

Farmers demand that the government fix the minimum support price at Rs500-Rs600 per 40kg for sugarcane and Rs4,500-Rs5,000 per 40kg for wheat to meet their cost of production. The Sindh Abadgar Board has made its demands public.

The cash-rich middlemen continue to manipulate prices, causing frustration among farmers and affecting consumers negatively. Last year's experience with the wheat crop has left growers worried about the current season.
