Suncor Energy Crushes Q2 Earnings Expectations on High Oil Prices and Refining Strength

Canada's Suncor Energy reported robust second-quarter earnings, surpassing analysts' expectations thanks to strong crude price realizations and record refinery performance.

The Calgary-based oil sands producer posted adjusted operating earnings of C$3.23 per share for the quarter ended June 30, outdoing a consensus estimate of C$3.07 per share from LSEG data.

The company's downstream business was particularly impressive, with refinery crude throughput rising to a record 470,600 barrels per day and refinery utilization increasing to 92% from 87% in the same period last year.

This strong refining performance has become a major earnings driver for integrated oil companies as global supplies of diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel remain constrained by disruptions to refining and shipping.
