Syria's Bumper Wheat Harvest Could Ease Pressure on Foreign Currency Reserves

The Syrian Grain Establishment has announced that it no longer needs to import wheat for this season, thanks to a bumper harvest. The establishment purchased around 2.7 million tons of wheat from farmers, exceeding its annual requirement of approximately 2.55 million tons.

This development could ease pressure on Syria's limited foreign currency reserves and reduce the country's reliance on imports, particularly from Russia, which has been a major supplier of wheat to Syria for years.

However, economist Yafa Nawaf notes that this figure represents only what the establishment purchased from farmers, not total national production or overall consumption. The estimated annual wheat consumption in Syria is around 4 million tons, leaving a gap of about 1.45 million tons.

Nawaf emphasizes that establishing self-sufficiency at the national level would require a clear balance showing total production, existing stocks, consumption, and other factors.
