Syria's Energy Minister Details Sector Challenges and Roadmap for Growth
Syria's Energy Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir recently briefed the People's Assembly on the country's energy sector challenges and development plans. He emphasized that despite efforts to increase domestic gas production, a stark imbalance remains between supply and national demand.
Al-Bashir reported that Syria currently produces approximately eight million cubic meters of gas per day, whereas the national requirement is around twenty-four million cubic meters. To bridge this gap, the country imports around six million cubic meters daily from Azerbaijan and Jordan at a cost of $140 million per month.
The minister outlined a roadmap to boost oil and gas output by rehabilitating damaged fields and wells, modernizing infrastructure, and digitizing ministerial operations. He predicted that Syria will achieve self-sufficiency in oil production by 2028 and require about seven years for gas production to reach satisfactory levels.
