Tamarack Valley and Headwater Exploration Merge for C$10 Billion
On Tuesday, a flurry of corporate deals swept through various industries, led by Canadian oil producers Tamarack Valley and Headwater Exploration agreeing to an all-stock merger valued at C$10 billion.
This tie-up would create the largest publicly traded producer focused on Alberta's Clearwater oil play, indicating that energy companies still see value in consolidation even after years of it. Reuters also reported a series of moves across industries, including EverBank Financial's $3.9 billion reverse merger to acquire WaFd and Poste Italiane sweetening the cash portion of its Telecom Italia bid.
Cross-border activity was also notable, with Platinum Equity selling Italy-focused De Wave Group to Renaissance Partners for about €400 million, and EDF in talks to buy electricity supplier So Energy, which is majority owned by Ireland's ESB. These deals demonstrate that dealmaking isn't limited to one type of buyer or reason.
The all-stock merger between Tamarack Valley and Headwater Exploration is significant because it creates a single entity with a larger 'equity float', making the stock easier for large institutions and index funds to own. This increased liquidity can make the stock more attractive as 'deal currency' in future consolidation, setting the tone for how public markets price Clearwater-focused Canadian oil producers.
