Tanker on Fire off Saudi Coast After Mysterious Projectile Strike

A tanker caught fire off the coast of Saudi Arabia after being hit by an unidentified projectile, according to the UKMTO. The incident occurred about 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu, a key oil port on the Red Sea. The crew is safe and accounted for, with no reports of environmental impact.

The port has assumed heightened strategic importance as vessels seek alternative routes due to ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Security concerns have intensified around shipping corridors in the Red Sea, following recent Houthi strikes targeting Saudi-affiliated vessels and installations.

On August 17, the Houthi group claimed a ballistic missile attack on a Saudi military landing ship and four escort vessels off the southwestern port city of Mocha. The operation was described as 'direct and precise' by Yahya Saree, Houthi military spokesperson.
