Tanzania's Mineral Sales Surge to 7.78 Trillion Shillings in Six Months
Tanzania's mineral sales have reached 7.78tr/- in the first six months of this year, marking a significant increase from last year's annual earnings.
The figure represents about 66.5% of the country's total mineral sales for 2025 and is attributed to sustained expansion in the mining sector, according to Bank of Tanzania (BoT) statistics.
TanTrade Deputy Director General Fredy Liundi stated that the growth demonstrates the positive results of the government's efforts to strengthen the mining sector. He also attributed it to increased participation by licensed small, medium and large-scale miners in the formal market and improved business environment.
The Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, implemented by BoT, has contributed significantly to the growth, with the central bank purchasing 34 tonnes of gold worth 4.7 billion US dollars (about 12.5tr/-) since 2024. The programme has increased foreign exchange reserves by 2.05 billion US dollars (about 5.44tr/-) in less than two years.
The Ministry of Minerals aims to expand detailed geophysical survey coverage from the current 16% to 50% of the country's land area by 2030, which is expected to unlock new mineral-rich areas and reduce exploration costs for small-scale miners.
