TAPI Gas Pipeline Nears Completion, Enabling Afghan Supplies by 2027
The Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India (TAPI) gas pipeline is nearing completion, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2026. This will pave the way for natural gas deliveries to Afghanistan in 2027, according to Turkmenistan's ambassador to Pakistan, Atajan Mulamov.
The TAPI pipeline, stretching approximately 1,800 kilometers, is designed to transport 33 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan's Galkynysh gas field through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. The project has been years in the making, with construction resumed on the Afghan section after a delay due to security challenges, financing difficulties, and political uncertainty.
The completion of the Serhetabat, Herat section, which links Turkmenistan with western Afghanistan, will mark a major milestone in one of Central and South Asia's largest regional energy projects. This segment is expected to enable gas supplies to Afghanistan in 2027 before the project continues toward Pakistan and India.
