Tea Gardens Residents Rally Behind Gas Export Tax Petition

A group of residents in Tea Gardens, Australia showed their support for the National Day of Action on September 19th by setting up a street stall to gather signatures for a petition. The petition calls for a fair share of the value of gas exports for Australian communities.

Lyne Together, a local community group, organized the event and set up outside Coles at Tea Gardens. Andrew Dickinson, spokesperson for Lyne Together, emphasized that offshore gas is the only mineral extracted from Australian territory without paying effective royalties, allowing companies to make billions in profit.

A campaign led by ACT Senator David Pocock aims to introduce a 25% tax on Australia's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports. Modeling by the Australia Institute suggests this would raise an additional $17 billion in federal revenue, equivalent to around $50 million per day.
