Teck Resources Emerges as Canadian Copper Benchmark
Teck Resources (TSX:TECK.B) is emerging as a key player in the Canadian copper market. The Vancouver-based miner has refocused its operations around copper production, having sold its steelmaking coal business and upgraded its Quebrada Blanca operation in Chile to steady production.
The company's rising copper output, strong balance sheet, and pending merger with Anglo American plc have solidified its position as a natural reference point for Canadian exposure to electrification and global copper supply. The S&P/TSX 60 index tracks 60 large Canadian companies, and base-metal producers of Teck's scale are relatively rare within it.
Notably, the merger with Anglo American is awaiting final regulatory approval in China. Once complete, the combined entity, Anglo Teck, will give investors more than 70% exposure to copper and target US$800 million in annual pre-tax synergies.
