Tensions Flare as Trump Rejects Iran's Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has departed New York after attending the annual UN General Assembly, where he pushed back against US President Donald Trump's latest threat to 'annihilate' the Islamic Republic.
Pezeshkian's speech ended with an offer of continued diplomacy from Tehran. However, it was clear that a major sticking point remains: Iran wants the US to lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports and waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming talks on its nuclear program.
US officials have been engaging in 'positive and constructive conversations' with mediators, according to the White House. Meanwhile, Trump has taken a more unilateral approach, posting a map on his Truth Social platform labeling the key waterway as the 'Trump Strait.'
