Tensions Rise as Houthi Attacks Disrupt Global Energy Supplies
New attacks on Saudi Arabia and vessels in the Gulf have heightened tensions in the region after an assault on a Saudi oil pipeline and a Houthi advance threatened to worsen disruptions to global energy supplies.
The strikes, which included a projectile hitting a vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz, forced crews to evacuate and sparked concerns about oil prices rising again when markets reopen on Monday.
Saudi state media released footage showing damage to homes and a mosque from the purported latest cross-border attack by the Houthis in Jazan province in the south.
The Saudi Civil Defense issued alerts for potential danger in four southern cities amid an uptick in Houthi attacks, but later lifted them after declaring all clear.
Iran's Fars news agency cited an Iranian foreign ministry official as saying that a meeting with Gulf Arab states in Oman to discuss future shipping routes through the strait had been postponed at the request of some regional countries.
