Tensions Rise as Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz has become a hotbed of tensions in the Middle East as Iran asserts control over the waterway. On Friday, Tehran reported that it had struck an oil tanker attempting to transit the strait, citing an 'illegal attempt' by the vessel. The state broadcaster cited the Revolutionary Guard Corps, stating that unauthorized passage through the strait would result in the destruction of offending vessels.
The Associated Press was unable to confirm the report immediately. However, it has been reported that a ship security incident occurred 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, on the other side of the strait. The crew remained safe, and no environmental impact had been confirmed.
In related news, South Korea is considering expanding its naval operations in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen and Somalia to protect its ships and oil shipping routes. President Lee Jae Myung emphasized that South Korea would not take action drawing it into the U.S.-Iran conflict. He stated that his government was exploring options to safeguard its economy and vessels without intervening in the war.
