Texas Drivers Face Record-High Gas Prices Amid Ongoing Conflict

Texas drivers paid more for gasoline last month than in any September on record. The statewide average price for regular unleaded gas hit $3.94 per gallon, making it the most expensive September in Texas history, according to a report by AAA Texas.

The agency attributed this new record to ongoing conflict involving the Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates about a quarter of the ocean's global oil trade. Crude oil prices have recently eased back into the $90-per-barrel range, but gasoline prices remain unusually high for this time of year.

Drivers in El Paso paid the most on average at $4.34 per gallon, while customers in McAllen paid the least at an average of $3.74 per gallon. This is a significant increase from 2012, when gas prices averaged $3.63 per gallon in September.

The highest statewide average ever was set in June 2022 at $4.69 per gallon. According to AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster, 'While crude oil prices have recently eased back into the $90-per-barrel range, gasoline prices remain unusually high for this time of year.'
