The power grid in North Carolina and South Carolina is facing significant strain due to record heat waves, hurricane season, and droughts. As a result, demand for electricity is increasing rapidly, with Duke Energy forecasting an eightfold increase over the next 15 years. To manage this growth, energy experts recommend an 'all of the above' approach, combining various resources to ensure affordability and reliability.
Texas has successfully implemented this strategy, investing heavily in renewable energy and achieving a balanced generation mix. In just five years, the state added 14,000 MW of wind power and 19,000 MW of solar, with renewables now generating 30% of its electricity. This growth is driven by lower costs and long-term planning, rather than climate goals.
Wind and solar are ideal for extreme weather conditions, providing quick-to-deploy resources that help stabilize prices and reduce reliance on expensive fuel purchases. While the Carolinas have made progress in solar expansion, their pace of development is slower compared to Texas. North Carolina's renewables provide 15% of electricity generation, while South Carolina remains at 8%.
Investing in wind and solar can also help mitigate the effects of natural gas price spikes during severe weather events. By building a more diversified resource mix, utilities can protect customers from sudden swings in fuel costs. Fossil fuels have their own reliability challenges, including disrupted fuel supplies and prices due to extreme weather or global events.
