Texas Tops Record-Breaking U.S. Natural Gas Production with 13,603 Bcf
The United States produced a record-breaking amount of natural gas in 2025, with Texas leading the charge. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gross natural gas withdrawals reached 47.7 trillion cubic feet that year. Texas alone accounted for over a quarter of this total, producing 13,603 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas.
The Permian Basin in Texas and the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania are among the most productive shale formations driving output in these two states. Pennsylvania followed closely behind, with 7,676 Bcf of gross withdrawals, making it the second-largest producer in the country. The combined output of these two states accounted for nearly 45% of U.S. natural gas production.
Other top-producing states include New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Alaska. The Appalachian Basin has emerged as a major gas-producing hub, with Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio together producing 13,377 Bcf in 2025. This significant production base contributes to the country's dominance in global gas markets.
The figures highlight the importance of shale formations in driving U.S. natural gas production. The data suggests that these regions will continue to play a crucial role in meeting domestic energy demands and potentially influencing global energy markets.
