Thailand Seeks Energy Security with Renewables Shift
Thailand is planning to shift its energy mix away from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and towards renewable sources of power. The move comes in response to the ongoing Iran war, which has highlighted the country's vulnerability to external shocks. Energy Minister Akanat Promphan said that Thailand aims to generate 60% of its electricity from clean energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro in 25 years time.
This target is more ambitious than previously announced, with the previous goal being 30%. The new targets will be officially announced in an updated 25-year national power plan due for release in October. Thailand's move towards renewable energy is a significant step towards reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels and mitigating the impact of global conflicts.
