Thailand Seeks Global Energy Majors for Andaman Gas Exploration
Thailand is preparing to open its 26th petroleum exploration and production bidding round in the Andaman Sea, aiming to increase domestic gas supplies and reduce dependence on costly liquefied natural gas imports.
The Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) has high expectations for the Andaman acreage due to major petroleum discoveries in nearby waters and geological structures considered potentially continuous with areas on the Thai side.
Global energy majors, including ExxonMobil, Shell, and Eni, have expressed interest in studying the available data. The DMF expects successful bidders to be announced around mid-2027 after evaluating state benefits and development plans.
The Andaman blocks cover deep-water areas ranging from 200 meters to two kilometers in depth. Drilling an exploration well is expected to require investment of around $30 million, with the first exploration well potentially drilled within two to three years after contracts are signed.
