Thailand to Boost Bioenergy in New Power Development Plan
Thailand is set to prioritize bioenergy as a key component in its upcoming power development plan (PDP), aiming to reduce dependence on expensive liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and bolster energy security. An energy official involved in the planning highlighted that biomass-based generation facilities, including a wood chip-fired power plant in Satun operated by TPC Power Holding, will play a crucial role in this strategy.
The PDP, slated for completion by June 2025, outlines a goal to increase the share of bioenergy in the country's power generation to 6% by 2037. The plan also emphasizes the importance of waste-to-energy systems and other renewable energy sources to enhance energy resilience and reduce costs.
According to the official, the strategy aims to mitigate the risks associated with fluctuating LNG prices and ensure a stable energy supply. The PDP proposes significant investments in biomass power plants, with a projected capacity of 5.2 million megawatts, to support this transition.
Additionally, the plan includes measures to promote regional cooperation and private sector participation in developing bioenergy projects. The official stressed that the success of this strategy depends on effective policy implementation and collaboration among stakeholders.
