Thailand Unveils Ambitious Solar Plan to Reduce LNG Reliance

Thailand is launching an ambitious plan to install solar panels on the rooftops of 1 million homes within the next year. The initiative, backed by a $6 billion emergency fund for energy transition, aims to add 5 gigawatts of solar capacity to the grid and reduce the country's reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). This move comes as a response to the recent surge in LNG prices due to the Middle East conflict.

The plan involves providing up to $1,500 per residence to reduce installation costs and offering low-interest loans through state-owned banks. The net billing model will also allow families to sell excess electricity back to the grid. This move is expected to accelerate a structural change in Thailand's energy system and make it less vulnerable to international price shocks.

Thailand currently relies heavily on gas for electricity generation, with over 60% of its power coming from this source in the first six months of 2026. However, the country imports a significant portion of the gas used for power generation, making it exposed to international market fluctuations. The government's decision to invest in solar energy is seen as a strategic move to reduce dependence on imported fuels and mitigate the impact of price volatility.
