TotalEnergies' LNG Trade Sparks European Security Concerns

TotalEnergies, one of France's largest oil companies, has become Europe's biggest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), accounting for three times as much LNG imported to the European Union and United Kingdom as its nearest rival, Shell.

According to a recent report by Oil Change International, in 2025, 71% of TotalEnergies' LNG imports came from the US (42%) and Russia (29%).

This reliance on LNG imports poses significant risks to European security, energy affordability, and climate goals.

The report argues that Europe's best path forward is to equitably phase out fossil fuels, accelerate energy efficiency, and transition to renewable energy sources.
