Tour Results Fuel Market Volatility as Corn Prices Fall and Soybeans Trim Gains
The Crop Tour scouts recently swept across Nebraska, observing variable yields and heat stress on corn. Soybean pod counts also showed variation but indicated that late rains could be beneficial. In Indiana, the eastern leg scouts encountered flooding and water damage, with improved yields found in areas west of the flooding.
In South Dakota, Day 1 results confirmed the impact of heat and dry weather on crops. Ohio's corn yields and soybean pod counts raised questions about the eastern Corn Belt's ability to compensate for problems in the western region. The question remains whether Nebraska can outperform lowered expectations and if Indiana will pick up the slack.
The tour, which runs through Thursday, covers seven key states. Market reaction saw corn turn lower and soybeans trim gains after overnight increases attributed to Tour results and deteriorating weekly crop condition ratings. December corn fell 1 ½ cents to $4.88, while November soybeans held on to a gain of ¾ cent.
